History: 1906- Alzheimer's is first described by Dr. Alois Alzheimer in his patient named Auguste D.
1974- Congress establishes the National Institute on Aging (NIA). 1984- The NIA funds Alzheimer's Disease Centers and raises awareness. 1993- "The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approves the first Alzheimer’s drug, Cognex. The drug targets memory loss and dementia symptoms"(Alzheimers.net). 2003- "The NIA begins a National Alzheimer’s Disease Genetic Study to hopefully identify risk genes for the disease"(Alzheimers.net). 2011- "President Barack Obama signs the National Alzheimer’s Project Act which provides a national framework to support and fund Alzheimer’s research"(Alzheimers.net). 2013- "The G8 Dementia Summit in the United Kingdom launches an international effort to fight Alzheimer’s and find a cure by 2025"(Alzheimers.net). |
Symptoms:
The first signs of Alzheimer’s is increasing forgetfulness and mild confusion with everyday life. Over time, Alzheimer's begins to rob you of your memory, especially recent events, thinking and reasoning, making judgments and decisions, planning and performing familiar tasks, changes in personality and behavior. Life Expectancy:
People with Alzheimer’s can live a totally normal life, but might not have total memory or cognitive function. Normally people living with Alzheimer’s will have a caretaker or be within close proximity to family. |
